A new fan-made mod for the PC version of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth aims to improve one of the game’s most frequently discussed visual issues by enhancing its outdoor lighting. Created by modder dddd5, the Shader Injector replaces several of the game’s original lighting shaders, delivering improved shadows and more natural-looking environments with only a minimal impact on performance.
A Fan-Made Solution for Outdoor Lighting
While Final Fantasy VII Rebirth received praise for its visuals, some players have criticized the flatter lighting used in parts of the open world, particularly when compared to the more detailed lighting found in indoor environments.
The new Shader Injector addresses those concerns by intercepting DirectX 12 rendering calls and replacing specific lighting shaders during gameplay. According to the mod’s description, it includes two modified base-game shaders designed to improve lighting and shadow quality without significantly affecting frame rates.
Although the technical implementation is complex, comparison images released alongside the mod show noticeably stronger contrast, improved shadow definition, and more dynamic lighting across outdoor areas.
Early Updates Have Already Improved the Mod
The project has already received updates since its initial release.
Version 1.1.0 addresses several early issues reported by players while refining the overall lighting implementation. As development continues, additional fixes and compatibility improvements are expected.
Like most PC mods, the Shader Injector is unofficial and is available through Nexus Mods.
Arrives as Interest in Rebirth Grows Again
The release comes as interest in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth has increased following the official announcement of Final Fantasy VII Revelation, the concluding chapter of the remake trilogy.
With many players revisiting Rebirth—or experiencing it for the first time ahead of the trilogy’s planned Spring 2027 conclusion—the lighting overhaul offers PC users another way to customize the experience.
Although Square Enix has released updates for Final Fantasy VII Rebirth since its 2024 launch, this particular lighting overhaul is entirely the work of the modding community. For players who found the original outdoor lighting underwhelming, the Shader Injector provides an alternative that significantly changes the game’s visual presentation while preserving its overall artistic style.
